The Marriage Certificate ... the issue is a mystery.
What prompts amateur family historian Peter Sefton to buy the marriage certificate he sees on display in an antiques arcade? Is it because he thinks it should be private and he wants to remove it from public view? Is it the prospect of researching the individuals named upon it? Or is it something else, happenstance perhaps, which leads him towards a potentially lucrative discovery and a long forgotten family secret?
When John and Louisa marry in January 1900, who could foretell how their lives and those of ambitious Rose, the bridesmaid, and confident Frank, the best man, would be changed that day?
Follow their story, through Peter’s research and find out how, with investigative skill and a certain amount of luck, Peter finds himself pulled along to uncover a series of sad and tragic events … events, which connect the marriage certificate to a modern day mystery. But … there’s a complication. In his quest to complete the family tree he learns that he has competition. It’s not just a matter of pride; there’s money at stake too. Should he the amateur give up, or can he really beat the professionals at their own game?

Ah, my favorite type of mystery. And I loved the author's style of writing. He did not add superfluous details that drive me crazy when reading other authors--like all the landscaping details along the way for example. This was very clean cut, to the point and full of surprises that kept my interest up. I highly recommend this book and this author.Product details

The Marriage Certificate edition by Stephen Molyneux Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This was one of the most interesting books that I have read in a long time. Molyneaux's ability to make the characters from the past come alive was compelling. By the time the main characters of the story were introduced I could not put this book down--I was just so curious as to what became of John, Louisa, Rose, Frank, and Harry as well as others. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves family history!
As a family genealogest myself, I found this story uplifting. Liz. the lead in this story. Was a well written character. the ending was uplifting. I wish every search was like this. Makes you hope. Her search seamed easy to me as my own has been most diffuculate . Falling in love along the way gave an add demmensoin to the story..Finding her family so close was a neat twist. All in all this was a good book and I truly enjoyed it.
This was a good read on several levels. It was a mystery with interesting sidelines such as about the South African War and early British rail travel and life in early 20th century England. There were many characters whose stories all came together satisfyingly. And of course there was the main character's quest to find out about the Marriage certificate he had found - all in a race against time with a firm of heir-hunters (unbeknownst to him.).
As a genealogist, I could appreciate the steps he took and they were all accurately explained without being tedious. I wish I had the money to buy the number of certificates he did! I knew what he was doing but still found the story intriguing enough to keep reading.
You will enjoy it and will feel encouraged to have a go if you've ever wondered what the thrill is about genealogy!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, due mainly to my interest in family history research. But it was also well written. I liked the surprise at the end, nice touch. I wish, however, that the author had included the reaction of the Highborn heir-finders to learning they'd been outdone. It would have been nice for the researcher, Carol, to learn 'the rest of the story," after investing so much of herself into the quest for it.
I only gave it 4 stars because I sometimes had trouble keeping the characters straight, especially since I didn't read the book all in one day, or even one week. Going back and forth, from present to past, from researchers to those being traced, became confusing at times.
In spite of this, I'm hoping Mr. Molyneux will write another book soon. I will look forward to reading it.
I purchased this in format simply because someone recommended it.
I am so glad they did!
The author has interwoven the present and the past so that it is easy to follow. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, I didn't! I would highly recommend it as an interesting read for people who love history, and as a great read for budding genealogists who want to learn how to not leave any stone unturned.
And, the ending! I didn't see it coming. Not at all.
I enjoyed this book very much. The historical references were interesting. The twin factor added the intrigue that made the story complex. I found myself mentally rushing to get all the information turned in. And, of course, it was heartwarming to see the. of the sisters mer. Sad to discover that Louisa was so s selfobsorbed that she robbed Harry of the opportunity to lead a life He might have had, had she not been so
dependent on him. Then, there's Rose. All that money her grand daughters could have inherited !!!
This book caught my eye some time ago. I kept going back to it on and finally downloaded it. Boy, am I glad I did! I have done family histories for both my husband and myself so I was intrigued by the process used in this story. The book is well written except for one little flaw that bothered me. When the author jumped between the early 1900's to the present time, there was no indication of that leap. A simple date like "1901" or "present time" at each jump would have been helpful. Maybe that is being too picky but something that simple gives you the right mindset for what comes next. Granted, it doesn't take more than a sentence or two to realize what time frame you are in but something other than 1.2, 1.3, etc. would have been nice. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story and the final twist at the very end was wonderful! Kudos to the author - a priceless last page!!
